The Reze Arc Movie Dominates Domestic Box Office in Opening Weekend

Has Sony repeated their success? Coming after the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned in excess of $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has officially crossed the hundred-million-dollar milestone worldwide, reaching a worldwide gross of over $108 million this weekend. This feature outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its sophomore frame in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable American and International Earnings

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a immediate sequel of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It grossed over $18 million domestically after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5M Sunday performance. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced feature added nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2M stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, comparing the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34M in the U.S. and Canada in the year 2022 and started with a similar $18 million stateside. This movie's opening frame is in line with that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross is now positioned slightly below the earlier film's over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the numbers of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the studio.

Promotional Campaigns Boost Box Office Dominance

The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to drive their leadership at the anime box office. The Reze Arc advertising push began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at NYCC including exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

2025 is a big year for animated films, and for Sony, which has another feature-length anime debuting this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
