The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests by Egypt and Iran
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit Pride flags inside the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, our role is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the fan activities beyond the match venue,” said a committee representative.
Cultural Context Behind the Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's proud history of championing inclusion and equality.
- A design contest is underway to create images celebrating the occasion.
- Planners are committed to making sure all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.
The region is home to a significant most prominent Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
