Individuals from across the political divide and the entertainment world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Statement

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Detention

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a vile and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

Some GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his party to justify the statements.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of a different political figure.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
