Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
