Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
