Revealed at a major gaming event, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a narrative-driven exploration title. The game follows Gertie, a protagonist who challenges typical power fantasies. This central concept stemmed from an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.

"Imagine if you were without traditional weapons? Perhaps you are somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed Straley. "The concept seemed incredibly compelling to think about what makes a hero. A hero is about persevering against obstacles, including traits like dedication, resolve, and tenacity."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Although this project seems unfamiliar visually, its most significant advancement builds directly upon the technology pioneered in The Last of Us. The entire project was inspired by a key thought: "Is it possible to design a companion character more dynamic and responsive based on player actions?"

The mysterious beast that accompanies Gertie transcends typical AI behavior. The director likens it to a curious child that reacts with evolving behaviors. First, it exhibits curiosity, potentially leading to unexpected chaos. Subsequently, it tries to copy what it sees. Ultimately, it watches and learns grasping cause and effect.
